A Fathers Day Blog: Wild Wednesday 2026

I’d like to dedicate this years Fathers Day Blog to all the young men I know, especially my son, who will become fathers for the first time. This will turn me into a Grandmother for the first time too. When our sons were running crazy round our houses, accidentally breaking lamps while throwing footballs across the dining room table or wearing that same favorite shirt for the fifth day in a row, it was hard to imagine that those darling crazy boys would be the fathers of our grandchildren.
When my son was in the “I’m bored” mode in the summers of his pre-teens, I came up with an idea that he and any of his friends could participate in . We called it “Wild Wednesday” and we would collectively choose to do something that none of us had ever done before , including me. One that I especially remember was trying to find a place to hang out along the Ohio River that wasn’t surrounded by a city. I packed a picnic and I drove east along route 32. It was quite a ways past New Richmond that we finally found a spot where the river down could be seen as if it was 200 years ago. We were all so happy. They threw rocks and sticks into the speeding current all afternoon and devoured the picnic lunch I had packed, many of whom had never had a picnic before. That was two new experiences for that Wild Wednesday.
I loved Evan’s friends and I learned so much about them as we planned a new adventure those summers. Almost thirty years later, many of these same friends of Evan’s have also given their mothers grandchildren to love. Our boys will be and are now fathers of their own boys and girls and I’m sure their kindness and wit, joy and smarts I saw in them as children will touch each of their own sons and daughters.
Happy Fathers Day to all the first time Fathers we know !
